He began his political journey through active involvement in Scheduled Tribe welfare movements and farmer unions in Mananthavady. Kelu’s first political role was as a member of the Thirunelli Grama Panchayat in 2000, representing the Edayoorkunnu ward. Rising through ranks, he served as President of the Thirunelli Panchayat for ten years (2005–2015) and later as a member of Mananthavady Block Panchayat. In 2016, Kelu won his first Kerala Legislative Assembly election, defeating the former Congress minister P.K. Jayalakshmi, and increased his victory margin in 2021. Current Political Role

Kelu is currently the Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes in Kerala, having assumed office in June 2024 under the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. He has represented Mananthavady constituency in Wayanad district since 2016 and is the first CPI(M) minister from Wayanad.
