Personal Life of P. J. Joseph

P. J. Joseph, whose full name is Palathinal Joseph Joseph, was born on June 10, 1941, in Purapuzha village of Idukki district, Kerala. He was raised in a Syro-Malabar Nasrani Christian family by his parents Shri Palathinal Joseph and Smt. Annamma. Joseph credits his upbringing in a close-knit family with strong values of integrity, service, and community for instilling his deep sense of social responsibility and empathy.

He completed his education at St. Berchmans College, Changanassery, and St. Thomas College, Thrissur, earning a Master’s degree (M.A.) which laid the foundation for his analytical and leadership abilities. Deeply influenced by principles of equality, justice, and inclusivity, Joseph embraces a rights-based approach in both his personal and political life.

Joseph was married to Dr. Santha Joseph, a retired Additional Director of the Kerala Health Department, until her passing in 2023. They had four children: three sons—Appu John Joseph, Antony Joseph, and Jomon Joseph (deceased)—and one daughter, Dr. Anu Yamuna. He attributes much of his personal growth and resilience to the supportive bonds within his family.
