Maharashtra state is formed in 1960. In Maharashtra 288 MLA’s were elected for a period of 5 years. Maharashtra has a two-tier legislature i.e. it consists of two houses: Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) and Vidhan Parishad (legislative council) same as parliamentary system. Government is formed by the party, who is having majority either individually or in alliance. The leader of majority in assembly becomes the Chief Minister and selects the cabinet members.
11th Maharashtra Assembly elections was held on 13 Oct 2004. The major alliances were the Democratic Front and the Bharatiya Janata Party - Shiv Sena alliance. Other political parties contested were the Bahujan Samaj Party, the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, and the LJP. 66,000 electronic voting machines were used to elect the 288 members of the Maharashtra legislative assembly.
Results were declared on 17 Oct 2004 in which Congress and its alliance got majority. seats NCP 71, Congress 69, ShivSena 62 and BJP 54.
