Maharashtra state is formed in 1960. In Maharashtra 288 MLA’s were elected for a period of 5 years. Maharashtra has a two-tier legislature i.e. it consists of two houses: Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) and Vidhan Parishad (legislative council) same as parliamentary system. Government is formed by the party, who is having majority either individually or in alliance. The leader of majority in assembly becomes the Chief Minister and selects the cabinet members.

The term of the 12th Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra was due to expire on 8 November 2014. On 15th Oct 2014 election for Thirteenth Maharashtra Legislative Assembly held. All party fought election independently. The result was announced on 19 October 2014. BJP turned as major party with 122 seats, Shivsena 63, NCP 41 and INC 42. Devendra Fadnavis  as CM.
